The launch of BRAHMOS Block III version took place at on December 2nd 2010 from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Balasore off the Orissa coast, India.
In this landmark achievement, BRAHMOS was test fired, once again establishing its mountain warfare capability with upgraded software and a new advanced guidance scheme incorporating large scale maneuvers at multiple points and steep dive from high altitude with precision strike.
All the telemetry and tracking stations, including Indian naval ships positioned near terminal point, confirmed the accuracy of the mission and marked it as a “textbook launch.”
Defence Minister A K Antony congratulated the DRDO and BrahMos team for this highly successful launch of the new version of BRAHMOS.
“In this launch of the 290-km range BRAHMOS missile was put through extreme conditions and it successfully completed all complicated maneuvers as envisaged in the battle field in mountain terrains following the exact flight path given to it,” Dr. A S Pillai, CEO & MD of BrahMos Aerospace, said. The launch was executed from a Mobile Autonomous Launcher (MAL) by trained Army personnel.
High ranking Army officials who witnessed the launch congratulated the BrahMos and DRDO team for this achievement which will provide unmatched capabilities to the Indian Armed forces.
Last December during the two day visit of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to India the protocol has been signed by NPO Mashinostroyenia Director General and Designer General Dr. A G Leonov and BrahMos Aerospace CEO & MD Dr. A Sivathanu Pillai with an aim to maintain seamless supply of cruise missiles to the Indian armed forces
According to Brahmos officials, "Both sides have agreed to take necessary steps to secure the unconditional execution of the contracts for deliveries to the Indian armed forces. This makes it a first of its kind in the relationship between India and Russia that there would be no price escalation issue during the duration of the contract".
Under the agreement, both sides also pledged their readiness to work towards developing hypersonic version of the missile to maintain its leadership in cruise missiles.
BrahMos is planning to develop a hypersonic version of the 290 km-range cruise missile, which would travel at speeds above 5 Mach being practically invincible to enemy radars owing to its stealth technology and speed.
Earlier last December General Nikolay Makarov, the Chief of General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces also visited the BrahMos Design Center & headquarters.
General Makarov expressed that BrahMos is a model of cooperation in the field of Military Technical Cooperation and also said that BRAHMOS has become a vital weapon for defense of its country General Makarov said that BRAHMOS has no analog in the World today and is a very reliable weapon system. He also said that any country which will have such a weapon system will have very serious defense potential in the World.
"As Chief of General Staff I will recommend BRAHMOS to be equipped in the Russian Armed Forces too," General Makarov added.
Acknowledged military expert Ruslan Pukhov considers that "For Russia, the success of BRAHMOS has improved the chances of winning Indian contracts for aviation and naval platforms. It is usually the exports of platforms that normally drive the sales of weapons to be fitted onto those platforms."But in the case of BRAHMOS, it is the other way around: the missile is driving the sales of aircraft and submarines that can carry it," Dr Pukhov writes in the journal.
The airborne version of the missile primarily targeting the Su-30MKI family deployment has been tested jointly by BRAHMOS and the induction with Sukhoi is to be completed by 2012.The airborne version could be then offered to other Su-30MKI family customers. According to the experts, the Su-30MKI-BRAHMOS weapons system will be a truly lethal combination.
